Film Review: Iron Man 3

ironman3 Iron Man is one of the characters that has stood the test of time. Played brilliantly by Robert Downey Jr, it’s clear in this film how far his character has come. Since the events of Marvel Avengers Assemble, it’s clear that he’s suffering from PTSD, although he’s reluctant to admit it. He now suffers from panic attacks, and this makes him seem more human than ever. Read On...

Bennet vs. Bridget: Fictional Women and What They Do For Us

bridgetjones "It is a truth universally acknowledged that when one part of your life starts going okay, another falls spectacularly to pieces," says Bridget Jones. Bridget's diary began as a column in the Independent and went on to parody the classic novel Pride and Prejudice, and has since become a book, film and franchise. So, what can these fictional women do for their readers today?Read On...

The Rise Of Scripted Reality TV Shows And The Influence They Have

Reality TV shows are so dominant in our society that they are major talking points leading up to the episode, and for days after. But the "reality" concept is often questioned, as it becomes increasingly apparent that scenes are staged and scripted.Read On...

Lost Girl: Not So Lost After All

lostgirlbg Lost Girl isn't one of those shows like Game of Thrones with a huge fanfare and even bigger fanbase. It's a cult show that's crept out of Canada and is gradually increasing in popularity the longer it's on air. The power of its fans was felt when E! Online had its annual "Favourite TV Couple" poll, and Bo and Lauren beat out couples like Kurt and Blaine from Glee, House and Cuddy, Brittany and Santana (also Glee), and many more. It was most definitely the dark horse, but it showed the strength of the show's fanbase.Read On...

TV Show Review: Youngers

Teenagers are frequently in the media for mischief and mayhem: drunken fights, drug overdoses, underage pregnancies, knife crime, and of course, not forgetting The Jeremy Kyle Show! Pornography: Lights, Camera, Degradation?

Connection / Reaching out Let’s not beat around the bush or put countless euphemisms at play; when it comes to talking about pornography we often get lost in all the terminology and lose focus of the fact that actually there are countless women exploited in its manufacture. But then could every case be defined as exploitation? What is the difference between a sex scene in a mainstream movie and a pornographic video clip on the internet? Take a look at both sides of the coin, draw up a conclusion, but remember–both sides exist in the first place, and both aspects play their roles.Read On...

How Hollywood is Trying to Ruin Your Relationships

PASSION "Ruin" might seem like an exaggeration; maybe I'm doing a Wiseau, and I'm secretly incredibly bitter. Perhaps my greatest love left me for my best friend, who also happened to be the star of an all-singing, all-dancing, high-grossing musical-cum-movie. I'm not, and they didn't, but I can understand why you might think my wording a little harsh. The "Hollywood" effect is insidious, and most of us probably don't even realise that we've latched onto something we've seen played out on the big screen. It's difficult to define exactly how it affects us but here are just a couple of ways that we're shooting ourselves in the foot.Read On...

Spartacus, DeKnight and Women’s Rights

Spartacus is Steven S. DeKnight’s retelling of the legend. He has, of course, taken some creative license with it, as is to be expected. A good example of this is the popular couple of Agron and Nasir, as well as the majority of female characters. Just because they weren’t based on real people like Spartacus, Batiatus or Crixus, however, that doesn’t make them any less believable.Read On...

Yes, I Went to An All-Girls School and No, I’m Not A Raving Lesbian

schoolgirls

I once told a friend I’d gone to an all-girls school, and his response was that he couldn’t tell because I was “neither a massive slag nor a raving lesbian”. Apparently, 98% of students attending a single-sex school fall into these two categories. This is obvious if you listen people who went to mixed schools talk; single-sex schools are hotbeds of teenage experimentation, though they focus more on the schoolgirl lesbianism than buggery at Eton. The teenagers who experiment are always straight and confused, and absolutely no gay people exist apart from the Art teacher who is a figure of mockery. People who went to single-sex schools can’t talk to the opposite sex, and act like Hugh Grant or Miranda Hart in the presence of a hot guy/girl...
