Sex Education in most of the Western world has a tendency to fall a little short of reality. For every individual declaring themselves to be sexually liberated, there’s a confused teenager who knows vaguely how to put a condom on a banana… And not much else. In England there’s a tendency to stick to the basics, and those basics are as follows:
- When you put a penis and a vagina in a room together, somebody’s probably going to get pregnant. It’s best to separate these appendages in order to minimise the risk of random babies.
- If young people are shown slideshows of sexual diseases and their effects, they will probably never want to touch anybody for as long as they live. For best results, show this slideshow right before lunch.

In the book Are You Smart Enough to Work at Google, author William Poundstone relates a story about Nordstrom’s. The high-class fashion retailer has three criteria for potential female employees, which results in 90% of job applicants being dismissed before the interview has even begun.
These credentials are:
- Must be wearing black
- Must be wearing heels
- Must be wearing a watch
Nordstrom’s are allowed to be picky; they’re a pretty great employer, often rated in the Top 100 Places to Work in America. And now, in the recession (Year 4 and still no sign it’s getting better!) even middling companies are getting CVs and applications from massively over-qualified people; new graduates, people who were made redundant.

It’s a question which plagues schools, churches, and literature: what about that ‘sex before marriage’ business, eh?
